Last minute fares are one of the most difficult to find at a reasonable price. While ideally we'd be making plans for our air travel several weeks in advance, sometimes it's just not possible. Where do you find a discount on last-minute travel?

Is there such as thing as a cheap airplane fare when you're traveling at the last minute? Of course there are good deals to be had for the last minute traveler. Not every kind of travel can be planned well in advance.

Some types of travel, such as family emergencies and an unplanned weekend getaway, just can't be planned in advance. Getting a special deal on last minute fares is going to take some effort and you may have to make concessions. If you're looking for a Friday evening flight to Bermuda and shopping on Friday morning, chances are that you're going to pay for it unless you're willing to make some compromises on the way that you're traveling.

Non-stop flights cost more. Simply stated and factual, if you want a last minute flight to a place where everyone would love to go, then you're going to pay for it unless you're willing to take a flight that has a layover, or isn't non stop. If you'd rather get there in a hurry, be prepared to pay for the privilege. Of course that doesn't mean that you can't get last minute fares as cheaply as possible, but it probably does mean you're not going to get that rock-bottom priced that others got on Wednesday afternoon.

When some flights aren't going to be as busy as others, places where people truly want to be over the weekend are going to be busy. Larger cities such as Las Vegas for example are going to be in high demand for weekend travel. If you're planning a weekend retreat to Big Sur, you're probably out of luck, but if you're going to visit Aunt Millie in Podunk, you can probably find the flight you want.

One way to get around the higher fees for the bigger and more in demand cities is to fly into another area that is nearby and then rent a car. For example, in many cases, those who want to go to Omaha fly into Minneapolis and drive down. The fares are generally a lot less costly. Who goes to Minneapolis right?

Last minute fares on flights that have not yet filled up are often discounted too. Websites such as Expedia and Priceline regularly offer a calendar of fares at the beginning of the week which they update. You can find a relatively great deal on some of the sites, even down to naming your own price if you're willing to make concessions about stopovers and other things.

If you're in a hurry to get somewhere, those are going to be your best options to get there fast and with the best of the last minute fares that can be found. The internet thankfully gives us all a means to comparison shop that wasn't available to us just a few years ago.
